Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General on Somalia

New York, 09 June 2011 – The Secretary-General welcomes the "Kampala Accord" signed today between President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia and Speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden of the Transitional Federal Parliament, which will enable the Transitional Federal Institutions to work constructively in the interest of the Somali people.

The Secretary-General commends the efforts of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda and those of his Special Representative, Mr. Augustine P. Mahiga, in facilitating the signing of this Agreement.

The Secretary-General urges the Somali parties to swiftly implement this Accord within the framework of the Djibouti Agreement and in line with the Transitional Federal Charter. He also calls on the Somali parties to act resolutely to complete the outstanding transitional tasks, including the promotion of national reconciliation, constitution-making and the associated public consultation, and rebuilding the security sector.

The United Nations will continue to support efforts to bring lasting peace and stability to Somalia and urges the international community to provide timely support to the Somali Transitional Institutions and to the African Union Mission in Somalia.
