Nairobi, 6 May 2010 – The UN Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, has said he is deeply shocked by the murder of the veteran journalist, Sheikh Nur Mohamed Abkey, by armed men in Mogadishu. The journalist, who was working for Radio Mogadishu, was killed on Tuesday, one day after World Press Freedom Day.
"I am shocked by this cold-blooded murder," said Mr Ould-Abdallah. "Unfortunately it is not the first time that journalists have been targeted and we condemn all such killings. Journalists are all too often at the receiving end of violence, intimidation and threats and yet they continue to carry out their work.
"I would invite the Government to do more to protect people who are working for the restoration of peace in Somalia and the future of the country. Those who are responsible for the violence must be held accountable and brought to justice."
