Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

UNPOS leadership meets Somali President-elect Hassan Sheikh

Mogadishu, 11 September 2012 - Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG), Augustine Mahiga and Deputy Special Representative (DSRSG), Peter de Clercq paid earlier today in Mogadishu a courtesy visit to the newly elected President of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. SRSG and DSRSG congratulated the President-elect on his victory, which marked the end of the transitional period. UNPOS leadership paid tribute to the integrity and quality of the process, which was both representative and transparent.


President Hassan Sheikh thanked SRSG Mahiga and DSRSG de Clercq and indicated that he was looking forward to work with the UN. UNPOS leadership in return pledged support to the new Somali government.
