Food and Agriculture Organization [1]
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) [2] is a specialized technical agency that leads international efforts to defeat hunger by working towards the alleviation of poverty and strengthening of livelihoods and food security.
FAO plays a key role in informing humanitarian response in Somalia through its information collection and analysis projects that provide essential information to enable both short-term emergency response and longer term strategic planning:
- Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) [3]; and
- Somali Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM). [4]
FAO leads the emergency-oriented Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) [5] Agriculture and Livelihoods Cluster for Somalia. FAO’s emergency interventions in Somalia aim at prevention, mitigation and response to natural disasters and the impact of conflict, while longer-term interventions focus on crops, livestock, fisheries, forestry and their interactions with the environment.
