The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

UNPOS & UNSOA assist victims of the suicide attack

Following the suicide attack at the Shamow Hotel in Mogadishu on Thursday 3 December 2009, UNPOS and UNSOA set up a task force to assist in the medical evacuation of critically injured patients to provide medical care in Nairobi hospitals. Nineteen patients were evacuated to the Aga Khan hospital. Some days after their hospitalisation, the SRSG today paid a visit to the patients to assess their medical condition and offer them moral support.
