Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

UN Security Council Press Statement on Somalia

New York, 24 August 2010 – The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attack in Mogadishu today, which resulted in the death and injury of innocent civilians, including Members of the Somali Parliament.

The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of those killed in the attack, as well as to the Transitional Federal Government. They called for the perpetrators to be brought swiftly to justice.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support to the Transitional Federal Government and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and expressed their continued appreciation for the commitment of troops by the Governments of Uganda and Burundi.

The members of the Security Council stressed the need to continue strengthening Somali security institutions and the importance of an inclusive dialogue in the peace process.
