Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson for the SG on the attack in Mogadishu

New York, 12 September 2012  The Secretary-General strongly condemns today’s attack on the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, in which newly elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was meeting with the Kenyan Foreign Minister, Professor Samuel Ongeri, in the presence of international media. He is saddened by the deaths of several Somali and AMISOM soldiers who responded to the incident. [Statement]

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the SG on the selection of the Somali President

New York, 11 September 2012 - The Secretary-General congratulates Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on his selection as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, following the vote of the New Federal Parliament in Mogadishu yesterday. The selection of the new President brings an end to the eight-year political transition.  The Secretary-General congratulates the New Federal Parliament and its Speaker for the peaceful and orderly conduct of the process. He also pays tribute to all the signatories of the Roadmap for Ending the Transition for the important role they have played to bring the process to a successful conclusion. [Statement]

Statement from the SRSG Mahiga on the elections of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as President of Somalia

Mogadishu, 10 September 2012Today the Somali people have taken a great step forward on the path to peace and prosperity. Today, Somalia’s Parliamentarians —in a calm, dignified and contemplative manner—ended the transitional period decisively and selected Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to serve as the next President of Somalia. The process was representative and Somali owned. Through two rounds of balloting and in a transparent manner in full view of the world, the process was peaceful, orderly and fundamentally democratic. Somalia has proved the doubters wrong and sent a powerful message of progress to all of Africa and indeed to the entire world. [Statement]

SRSG statement on the election of the Speaker of the new Somali Parliament

Mogadishu, 28 August 2012 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga offers his warmest congratulations to the Somali people on the election of a new Speaker of Parliament. Professor Mohammed Sheikh Osman (Jawari) was today overwhelmingly selected to represent the New Federal Parliament. The election of Deputy Speakers will take place in the immediate future, laying the groundwork for the election of the President, which the SRSG calls on all parties to ensure takes place “within ten days.” Around 230 participated in today’s voting, which was held at the Police Training Academy in Mogadishu. SRSG statement on the finalization of the list of Parliamentarians
Mogadishu, 25 August 2012 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga is encouraged by the progress made by the Traditional Elders and by the Technical Selection Committee (TSC). However, he remains deeply concerned by the ongoing delays of the finalization of the list of the Members of Parliament that might threaten the electoral calendar. [Statement]
